BIG Strategic Basis
Purpose of the BIG CIC
Discussion here
We need to separate the purpose of BIG (not this) and the Purpose of the BIG CIC
- Knowledge Growth & Sharing – Expand and share knowledge on Business Integrated Governance (BIG) with members, professional bodies, partners and the public
- Community Engagement – Encourage volunteer participation in knowledge advancement and sharing.
- Domain Integration – Work with relevant professional bodies to align and integrate knowledge within and adjacent to BIG
- Partner development – Support organisations to define and develop consulting, services, training and solutions leveraging BIG.
- Education & Accreditation – provide the Body of Knowledge, oversee exams, and issue BIG credentials.
- Scope Limitation – BIG CIC does not offer consulting, training services, or tech products.
Vision for BIG CIC
Vision Discussion here -
BIG CIC is a sustainable nonprofit dedicated to developing and sharing Business Integrated Governance (BIG)—an open-source framework that helps organizations improve strategy delivery by defining, building, and managing the capabilities needed for end-to-end strategic execution. Its Body of Knowledge outlines key concepts, principles, components, and a roadmap for strategic improvement. This evolving resource is continuously enriched through collaboration, education, and accreditation within an active community.
- BIG Body of Knowledge (BoK) – A free, evolving knowledge base with summarized public content and in-depth details for members.
- BIG Membership – A free subscription granting access to the BoK, making members key stakeholders.
- BIG Leadership & Volunteers – Leaders guide BIG CIC; volunteers develop and share knowledge.
- BIG Partners – Provide training, consulting, and solutions to help organizations adopt BIG.
- BIG Professional Network – Collaborate with thought leaders and professional bodies to validate BIG.
- BIG Website – A central hub for introducing BIG, accessing the BoK, finding partners, and contacting BIG CIC.
- BIG Collaboration – Platforms like LinkedIn, YouTube, and Teams/SharePoint for discussion, content sharing, and deeper engagement.
- BIG Exams & Accreditation – A syllabus and exams to certify expertise in BIG.
- BIG Funding – Supported by donations, exam fees, and partner sponsorships.
High level messaging
We spoke at length about needing some high-level messaging about BIG for people to just use.
- I think we need to discuss a marketing approach for BIG – which is separate from any marketing that Partners may use to sell their wares around BIG
- We have to think about who we are talking to, and understand their pains / expectations
- We can then draw people into the concept through empathy in their situation
- If we can understand and can empathise, we may get the chance to explain
- We need to explain so we put it from their perspective
- I captured some comments from yesterday – maybe folks can pick up ideas and we can develop a list?
- To enable CEOs to think more widely about strategy delivery
- Improve strategy delivery
Holistic perspective of investments (CFO)
- Instrumental in what is needed for strategy delivery
- The purpose of the BIG CIC is to sustain and expand knowledge regarding our concepts of Business Integrated Governance to enhance Strategy to Delivery and back again.
- Situation – people sprinkle strategy delivery on like chock chips on a the cake – not bake it through
- Provides a framework that integrates governance and strategy for consistent benefits realisation
- Provides a framework that integrates governance and strategy for consistent benefits realisation and value creation
- Improve strategy by establishing shared frameworks, streamlined processes, and clear communication channels—bringing focus and coordination to unite teams and achieve the best results.
- To inspire organisations worldwide to deliver their strategy through BIG
I would develop something like this:
Who | Pain | Expectation | Answer |
CEO | Strategy delivery not happening | Expectation of strategy delivery | Framework to enable strategy delivery |
COO | Strategy delivery just not factored into workloads | Balance resourcing for BAU, Product Management and Strategic Change | BIG Operating model |
PMO Lead | Am seen as overhead foe strategy delivery | Need to re-establish PMO Value proposition | Guidance on tools and capability needed to operationalise strategy delivery |
Portfolio Manager | Cannot get business to focus on achieving benefits once project completed | Build the culture that pans for benefit realisation in a culture of accountability | Provide a framework that integrates governance and strategy for consistent benefits realisation |
CIO | Opportunities to improve process by leveraging digital tach and AI not being taken | Present viable use cases to leverage technology investment in data, tools and AI – to gain competitive advantage | Improve strategy by establishing shared frameworks, streamlined processes, and clear communication channels—bringing focus and coordination to unite teams and achieve the best results. |
CFO | Seeing business cases for expense just not delivering promises | Improve value achievement from investments | Framework to establish and manage accountability |
Maybe we can make an appendix of ideas people can use – like we have in “What is BIG and what is not BIG?”
- We already have high-level messaging about BIG, but please can I invite proposals for:
- I would suggest that further review should be made during material review / update:
