Every approval may appear reasonable on its own. Finance, risk, legal, commercial, technology and individual business areas all have legitimate interests to protect.
But what happens when nobody is responsible for the combined effect?
Governance can gradually become a maze of committees, controls and veto points. Leaders remain accountable for delivering outcomes, but the system around them makes timely decisions increasingly difficult.
The problem is not necessarily any single approval. It is that the overall governance regime has accumulated without being consciously designed or controlled.
We think BIG - and believe there should be a positive, rational approach to integrating governance as a force for progress, not prevention.
Our latest BIG blog explores:
- why governance can become more powerful than leadership
- how individually sensible controls can create an unreasonable overall system
- why simply removing controls may be dangerous
- how Business Integrated Governance can help examine accountability, decisions, information, assurance and delivery as one connected system
If you have ever thought, “This sounds like us”, this article may offer a useful way to begin the conversation with colleagues and stakeholders.
